Hey friends! 🌟

It’s back to school! Like this week! OMG!  This is a great time for parents to step in and help their kids establish a smooth and enjoyable routine. A well-organized day can make a huge difference in reducing stress and setting your child (and you) up for success. Here’s how you can support your kids in building an effective routine for their mornings, after school, and nighttime.

Morning Routine: Set the Stage for Success

  1. Create a Consistent Wake-Up Time: Help your child set a regular wake-up time to establish a consistent morning routine. Try to wake them up at the same time each day to help their body get used to the schedule.
  2. Plan a Balanced Breakfast: Start the day right with a nutritious breakfast. Offer options that include protein and fiber, like whole-grain cereal, yogurt with fruit, or eggs. Involve your child in choosing and preparing breakfast to make it more engaging. *TIP* make something before or pick something easy and fast.
  3. Organize the Night Before: Encourage your child to pick out their clothes and pack their school bag and lunch the night before. This helps avoid morning chaos and ensures they have everything they need for the day.
  4. Write it Down: Create a checklist or visual schedule for your child to follow each morning. Include tasks like brushing teeth, getting dressed, and packing lunch. This makes the process more structured and less stressful.

After-School Routine: Support Relaxation and Productivity

  1. Designate a Relaxation Time: When your child gets home from school, set aside a few minutes for them to unwind. Grab a healthy snack and some quiet time to help them transition from school mode to home mode.
  2. Set Up a Homework Station: Create a dedicated space for homework that’s free from distractions. Ensure it’s well-stocked with supplies like pencils, paper, and books. Encourage your child to work on homework at a set time each day to build a consistent habit.
  3. Encourage Physical Activity: After homework, encourage your child to engage in physical activities. This could be playing outside or even just going for a family walk. Movement helps to release energy and improve focus.
  4. Quality Family Time: Spend time together as a family after school. Whether it’s playing a game, cooking dinner together, or sharing stories from the day, this time strengthens family bonds and provides emotional support. I know in reality this seems like a pipe dream so remember quality over quantity. You don’t have to all sit together for an hour but you can have meaningful connection through short conversations on a walk or as you’re winding down for the day. True connection doesn’t have a time requirement.

Nighttime Routine: A Restful End to the Day

    1. Establish a Dinner Routine: Serve a healthy dinner and use this time to talk about the day. Chat about any highlights or challenges, and encourage your child to share their thoughts and feelings. Parents, you can also chat with each other. 🙂
    2. Implement a Calming Pre-Bedtime Routine: Help your child wind down with calming activities before bed. This could include reading a book, listening to soft music, or practicing relaxation techniques. Keep the routine consistent each night to signal that bedtime is approaching.
    3. Set a Regular Bedtime: Encourage a consistent bedtime that allows for adequate sleep. A regular sleep schedule helps your child’s body clock stay in sync and makes waking up in the morning easier. I notice a huge difference in my daughter’s mood when we are off schedule.
    4. Limit Screen Time: Reduce exposure to screens at least an hour before bedtime. Encourage activities like reading or quiet play that help your child relax and prepare for sleep.
    5. Reflect on the Day: Take a few moments before bed to reflect on the day. Talk with your child about what went well and any exciting plans for the next day. This helps them end the day on a positive note.

    Foster Flexibility and Fun

While routines are beneficial, it’s important to be flexible. Life can be unpredictable, so adapting the routine as needed ensures it continues to serve your family’s needs. Make the process enjoyable and involve your child in creating the routine to help them feel more invested.

By supporting your kids in establishing a thoughtful and engaging routine, you set them up for a successful and enjoyable school year. Your guidance and encouragement play a key role in helping them thrive both academically and emotionally. Also, let’s be real, when they are in a good rhythm, you’re in a good rhythm.
