New Year’s Day Feeling
I know by the title of this blog it may sound like I’m pushing us past all the holidays and right into 2020 by talking about New Year Planning while some of us feel like it’s still April. The year is FLYING by. It is truly mind blowing.
Trust me I’m not trying to push the new year out of its lane. I love all the holidays at the end of the year. They are festive and fun and I love seeing family and loved ones. But you know that feeling when you wake up on New Year’s Day?
That feeling of hope and excitement about what this year might bring. The feeling that this is THE year that you are going to start doing (fill in the blank) or finish (fill in the blank) or go on that trip that you’ve been talking about. It’s magical. It gives us confidence and drives us to start something new and try something different.
If we could bottle that feeling life would be awesome and we would make millions. It’s not bottled and for sale so let’s try to recreate that feeling and start working on those new and exciting goals and feeding our souls now. Let’s make Monday a new year.
Why Next Week?
Some of you may be thinking I’m crazy and if we are going to pretend next week is new years day then why not start tomorrow. Well to start with there is always a build up to the new year.
We know it’s coming. Commercials have been bombarding us with ads for champagne, sparkly dresses, and gym and fitness images for weeks. We even run into people asking what are resolutions are. Everything about the lead up of five days tells us we need to be ready to start making positive changes.
So let’s take the next five days to psych ourselves up. Get pumped for your mini new year! Let’s start making those positive changes now instead of waiting for 2020.
What About The “Actual” New Year Planning?
I am not trying to replace new year’s day 2020 (which at the time I am writing this is about two months away). Please don’t worry you can celebrate to your heart’s content and grab your champagne to toast the new year and then hit the ground running January 1.
This is about realizing that we don’t have to wait for a momentous date on the calendar to make changes and set goals and reset our year on a personal level. People don’t operate according to the calendar year.
We have breakthroughs and growth and achieve success when we put in the work and energy. We have become conditioned that we have to wait until certain times in the year to start working on those. We set goals each year.
Maybe we need to shake things up and look at it on a more individual level. If someone is ready to level up and make some changes let’s not push that off until January 1. Let’s start right away.
Your Mini New Year Challenge
If you’re on board with making Monday your new year then I challenge you to do the work. Take the next few days and do the work below and Monday celebrate YOUR new year. Important note for this challenge. These goals should be for the rest of this year. Make them short term (ie. to the end of December).
Reflect: Take some purposeful time to think about what this year has been like for you. Where are you now? What do you want life to be like at the end of December?
Write: If it resonates with you then journal your thoughts and reflections. If you’re not into journaling that is ok but to really emphasize your goals for the next two months you need to write them down.
Prepare: Set yourself up to accomplish your goals. If your goal is to take a trip. Start researching dates, hotels and transportation. If your goal is to have a garden in the spring then start making a list of books you need to read on creating one. When you have your vision you have to prepare for it to make it happen. If you want that promotion but you need to stop being late to work – prepare everything you need to get out the door in the morning the night before.
Execute: Get out there and start doing it. When Monday morning hits say Happy New Year to yourself and start working on those goals with that hopeful and exciting feeling.
